Wow from around the Net: New Level of Horror

I suppose it is about time for me to share my good news from this last weekend, well here it goes… I bought a house! That is right me and my Wifey have started the process of purchasing our first home and if all goes according to plan then we should be moved in before Christmas. The sad part for me is that yes I should be in a home in time to deck the halls and put up a tree but I will not be in the house in time for Halloween.

No home in time for Halloween means that I will not be able to decorate my home with skeletons and cobwebs. One of my favorite parts about this holiday growing up was that it was all about spooks and creepy crawlies, not the candy like most kids. Perhaps this is part of the reason why I have always enjoyed watching a good (or even a bad) horror film.

Speaking of scary movies there is a new method for inducing waves of terror while you are in the theatre. Everyone thought that the best new technology to increase the state of fear was the new Real3D, but the best that does is make us a little more jumpy. Now imagine if you were sitting in the theater and suddenly your phone rings just as the main character of the film dialed a phone. An unknown phone number has dialed you, answering it you suddenly realize that your voice is on the screen, and actor is answering you.

As it stands this is really only in Germany but I am severely hoping that it makes its way across the sea to our native land. See when it comes to scary movies I become just like a stereotypical black woman and yell at the screen, “Bitch Don’t go down the stairs!”. I wonder if I could actually get the main character to survive or would I be the cause of her demise?

Wow from arond the Net: Pulp Fiction Hero

Most guys, especially geek guys, dream that one day they will be involved in a terrible situation where they have to rise to the occasion. As a part of this fantasy we tend to hope that while that incident is happening we will be able to deliver an epic badass monolog. After years of watching action movies where our heroes challenge the bad guys all while being aloof and witty we have it ingrained that hopefully we will be able to do that too one day.

For one movie geek who has spent too much time watching these action movies that dream finally came true. A man down in Arizona this month stopped a couple of thieves who were trying to rob a café that he was dinning in. How did he do it? He stopped them dead in their tracks when they tried to take his wallet by quoting the Tarantino classic Pulp Fiction

Paul Horner was standing there in the middle of a situation that was about to go south when he had a choice, bend over backwards or take a stand. He was contemplating what to do when he got a flash of inspiration from none other than his wallet, a replica pulp fiction wallet. It was in this moment that he began to quote the famous monolog done by Samuel L Jackson during the scene of similar circumstances.

I bet that Paul went home thanked whatever God he prays to, crossed that off of his Bucket list and then probably threw on the film itself, because in all reality that is what I would probably do. I wonder if Quinten Tarantino or Samuel L Jackson heard about this if they would call him and congratulate him on this accomplishment because that would be more than awesome.

This strange news story is the perfect example of how a geekdom can change your life for the better. If it had not been for this man’s love of film he would not have had a muse to motivate him into action and save the day. I am sure if interviewed this man would recommend the film because it was a life changing experience for him.

Check out the Movie: Pulp Fiction

And what scene am I talking about, well if you don’t mind spoiling the movie for yourself then check it out here.

Spoiler Alert:

Oh man now I really want to watch this film like no other.

Wow from around the Net: Taken Nemo

I remember in 2003 when suddenly Disney and Pixar released one of their many cinematic master pieces to theaters Finding Nemo. I was in middle school and suddenly all of my peers were speaking whale and chanting “Mine”. It was the kind of feature film that was enjoyed by both children and adults due to its fun and colourful characters.

It almost seems that it was due to lending her voice to the forgetful Dory that Ellen DeGeneres’s star rose to its current heights. The plot to the movie was heart wrenching, a story of a father searching from his child that was TAKEN from him. The movie to say the least was just pure gold and was a sparkling example as to the wonder that is Disney and Pixar.

Now I wonder what would happen if you took the plot that made many a people shed a tear and turn it into something more adult. What we are talking about is a Dark movie about a father who has had his child TAKEN from him and will stop at nothing to get their offspring back. I wonder what that movie would be like, maybe it would be a gritty action packed film with lots of guns and dead henchmen whose lives were TAKEN by a vengeful father.

I wonder what we would call that movie.

Oh wait I go it, the movie would be called TAKEN and would star the very man who trained both Obi Wan and Batman, the one the only the Badass Liam Neeson.

With that basic comparison of the plot let me show you something that I found on the fabulous inter-web. Someone else figured this out and decided to mash up the two trailers and created this viral masterpiece.

I don’t know about you but if there was a film as cartoony as Finding Nemo but the gritty dialog of Taken I don’t think my brain could handle the awesome.

Wow from around the Net: The Gift

Carl Erik Rinsch don’t recognize the name, don’t worry nether did I, I had to do some research tofind out who this guy is but eventually I figured it out. Carl is the protégée of legendary film maker Ridley Scott, who is best known for his legendary cinematic masterpiece Alien. We have also had Ridley around to wow us with the cult classic Blade Runner, scare us senseless with Hannibal, take us back in time with Gladiator and made us witness the horrors of war in Black Hawk Down.

Ridley took Carl under his wing and had groomed him to take over the business of amazing story telling through cinema. In fact Mr. Rinsch was set to be the director of the recent major motion film Prometheus, but major network Fox would not hear it and forced Ridley back into the franchise.

Fear not however Carl Erik Rinsch may still have his chance to create wonderful sci-fi cinema for everyone to enjoy. He participated in a competition a couple of years ago held by the Philips Company called Parallel Lines. In the competition film makers had to create a short film using the same script and were awarding according to creativity.

The script is as follows

“What is that”
“It’s a Unicorn”
“Never seen one up close before”
“Beautiful”
“Get Away, Get Away”
“I’m Sorry”

Pretty simple script that is very open ended and thusly allows for a significant amount of creativity to grow from it. That in mind Rinsch’s creation is spoken in Russian I believe, I am not a hundred percent on that but it is my best guess. I watched it not knowing what was being said and still I thoroughly enjoyed watching it.

Check It out:

I watched a bunch of the other entries into this contest the top ten films are amazing and defiantly worth seeing. So check those out as well.

Unfortunately he did not win the competition he entered but he won something bigger this was done so well that people are bidding to make it into a full length film. This bidding war happened just over two years ago and there had been nothing yet on that front. Maybe if people get behind this the fantasy world in this short film can become something so much more and we may just have another fantastic sci-fi thriller on our hands.

What Did I Just Watch?: The Other F Word

Over the weekend I sat down with one of my good buddies to search through Netflix to find something to watch. We began scrolling through all of the films that they have for our viewing pleasure when we came across a documentary the we both wanted to watch. First off I do actually enjoy a good documentary and after watching one I usually feel better about myself. I think part of the reason that I thoroughly take pleasure in these features is that the make me take a step back and evaluate my life then I realize it could be worse.

The documentary that we watched is called the other F word. The main idea of the film is about punk rock figures and idols who became fathers and the experiences that came with fatherhood. Some big names in the industry such as Jim Lindberg, Flea, Art Alexakis, Tony Hawk and many more lend their names and share their stories of being fathers who the world looks down upon.

This is quite an interesting and very easy to relate to film and a lot of what was said by these ironically rebellious gentlemen have to say reflect my own feelings of fatherhood. Now me and Wify and a couple years from even considering bringing a child into this world but the things that worry me about my capabilities of being a father are expressed in this film. Also some of the stuff  they do makes them Rad Dads and I can only hope to be that sort of awesome father when I have children in my life.

Check out the trailer if my review is not enough to sway you:

This movie was defiantly a good watch and I recommend it as sort of an eye opener for all those rebels out there who may one day be a dad. Check it out, it is on Netflix and defiantly an excellent take on parenting and how it changes things.

Top 100 Insults in cinima

Today was an extremely slow day at work for me and I spent a lot of the time on my favorite website to mindlessly kill time, http://www.stumbleupon.com”>Stumbleupon. When I happened across this youtube film that outlines the top 100 movie insults, So I put my movie trivia to the test and attempted to name them all. Out of the hundred I guessed 58 of the films and had to look up the rest, my personal challenge was to not use the list provided which I did not. The part I find most interesting is that of all the films I have only seen 39 of them that includes 7 that I didn’t guess, maybe this is why I am good at scene it. I will admit it was a good time killer doing this as well as all the insults in a row are pretty funny, there is also a part two but I am thinking of saving it for another day.
