Home again

Well today I am freshly back home from a visit of the extended family out in the flat province of Manitoba. We got a little more visitation in before we boarded a metal tube with wings and jetted back home. As with any family trip we continued to meet hoards of new people whose names I have already pretty much forgotten which is ok because I do not believe that I will ever need to remember them.

After a swift check out of our hotel and a quick stop for life nectar, I mean coffee, at Tim’s we drove over to my uncle the father of the new groom. We arrived earlier than anyone else so we could help my uncle to set up for a hundred some odd BBQ he was holding in honor of his son and new daughter in-law. Being the first to arrive has some unique benefits that come along with it, the first is that my uncle being a bachelor with too much spare change means he has a pretty sick electric drum kit set up in his living room. Him not having anyone around a lot he was more than happy to let Brudar and myself play on his awesome big boy toy, Wifey however was not so impressed with our terrible attempts to have rhythm.

One of the other fun toys that my uncle has in his possession is a very large meat slicer complete with over sized rotating blade. He let me use this apparatus to slice all the vegetables for the BBQ, this is one kind of toy that makes prep work in the kitchen tons of fun.

We only got to stay to see a few of the guests arrive at the shin dig in my uncles back yard before we had to leave to catch our flight back home. As I have previously mentioned in my blog traveling with my direct family is frustrating and ultimately tiring. Last night I was glad to be home in my own house in my own bed going to sleep, travel is fun and all but ultimately it is nice to have my own space.

Today I started at my new job downtown like all jobs the first day is kinda boring because it is all about the orientation and getting to know what is expected of you within the job. Ultimately this is boring as all can be, you just sit there listening to human resources representatives tell you pretty basic things about safety and what kinds of forms you need to hunt down to get anything done. Alas it is not a total lose however some exciting things happened today, like i got my own cubical and my own office space with a name plate that means I am going up in the world. so here I go scaling up my corporate climbing wall because ladders are boring.

YWG Day Three: The Final Day

My cousins wedding was crazy amounts of fun last night and today is my last day in the city of Winnipeg. Being older now visiting with all my cousins is completely different then it was before when I was younger, I no longer feel like I am on the outside of the group like I use too. Conversing with my cousins is a lot more enjoyable now compared to when I was younger and I was the artistic kid and they all liked sports but this time we could laugh together and have a jolly old time. It was nice having my beautiful Wifey by my side while I rediscovered my family roots and ties, and like times gone past my brother stuck by me so that we wouldn’t have to face the kin alone but as a united front.

I have a slew of photos from the evening of my family that I want to share but right now I need to stop typing so I can pack. There is one more family event to go before we hop on a jet plane and head back to my wonderful city of Calgary. Check out is in a couple of hours and as always my father has planned everything down to the last minute for our trip so we must not be late for his very important dates and times.

I hope Mr. Devo is happy with the rock we found him on the beach of Lake Winnipeg.

YWG Day Two

This is the start of my second full day here in the grand city of Winnipeg and the events that transpired yesterday were indeed joyous so do allow me to recap. The day like all good adventures starting anywhere in Canada began with us trying to find a Tim Horton’s, which at first proved to be a challenge in upon itself. In a city that has the most restaurants per capita, according to my uncle, it took us twenty minutes of driving and almost giving up and settling for McDonalds before we found one. Ironically enough there is a Tim’s half a block from our hotel in the other direction then the direction we started our journey on. Due to my small size I was delegated to sit in the back of our rental bus, oops I mean SUV.

Then we were off to my Oma’s and Opa’s house, for those who are not of Germanic descent they are my grandparents, to show my Wifey where I spent every odd summer while I was growing up. I suppose this is the side of my family where I get my tendency to collect things because in my Oma’s house there are lots of things and pictures to look at. All the things that have been amassed have a story behind them so that makes it interesting and Oma is always willing to tell you where she got them.

Brudar and myself proceeded to show my Wifey around the estate of my family all the little uniquequirks about my Oma and Opa’s house. One thing about my clan is that we are not the greatest climbers in the world, sothere is a tree outside of my Oma’s house that has planks added to it to makeit easier for use ground loving folks to scamper up.Photobucket
Then we were off like a rocket to the quite family cabin for a day trip to enjoy old memories of a day long past. The road to the cabin took us through a little town called Gimli, which I found to be awesome and if you are geek like myself and enjoy lord of the rings then you know exactly who that is. For those who don’t know Gimli was the gruff and proud Dwarf who does not want the elf to know that Aragorn threw him.

We stopped here in town to do the most touristy thing imaginable, take pictures with a giant statue, but not just any statue but a giant landlocked Viking statue. So me and Brudar clambered out of the rental vehicle and climbed the statue, I know the clan is not good at climbing so we didn’t make it very high but we did it anyway. The reason we climbed was because there was absolutely no sign telling us not to, trust me I checked.

Back on the road we went to continue to our destination, the family cabin but one more thing the road that we traveled along is of some relevance. The road was number 222 and for those who know me you know that is a number is of significant importance to me and my kin. It took me and Brudar a couple times but we finally got a picture for proof.

Finally we made it to Helgoland the location of the family cabin.

We headed straight down to the beach and the water’s edge. It is still a little to chilly for a dip in the lake this time of year so we decided to take a family walk along the sand. A ways down we found a playground and my family being the big kids we are all decided to play on the rusty structures.

We returned to the cabin itself for some lunch and a riveting game of yatzee with my little Opa, a game my Wifey knows of by heart how to score. Then we returned to the House of my Oma and Opa for some dinner we had a special guest join us tonight, my Oma Lucky. Oma Lucky is actually my great grandma who unfortunately suffers from alzheimer's we still care for her greatly even tho she is very far gone.

Some more visiting occurred then we returned to our hotel room for a good nights sleep to continue our adventuring

Welcome to YWG

Photobucket
I have landed within the glorious city of Winnipeg, the capitol of Manitoba and the home town of my father and where most of his family takes up residence. This weekend I am in the prairie city for the first time since I was twelve years old because it is the wedding of my oldest cousin, wahoo weddings. I have not been back in such a long time which is weird because when I was growing up my parents had a system. This method of madness if you will was that alternating every year we would come out here to visit family and then the next year we would go to somewhere else.
Oh boy traveling by airplane, I am one of those people who actually enjoys the journey itself, whether it be by car or airplane. However the down side of my traveling adventure is that I am doing the trek with my direct family, it is not that I do not love them but they are not the most fun when it comes to traveling companions. My father is not the most enjoyable to travel with because he becomes a man on a mission leaving all the rest of us behind and he becomes irate when things don't seem to go his way. My mother is a nervous ninny who frets about ever single thing that happens and the worst case scenario, I was yelled at for touching some foam in a parking lot because she thought it might be a live wire that would kill me. Now for Brudar he has a bit of anxiety about getting separated so ultimately he becomes extremely clingy and since he is the size of a small tree having him hang off me is not the most fun thing in the world. I myself am probably not the most fun when it comes to travel and I very well have my own faults but this is why my functionally dysfunctional family is not the best to travel with.
I am here to have a good time and to show my Wifey apart of my past and so hopefully she can get to know some of my extended family before our own wedding. Today we are trekking out to the family cabin that I have not seen since I was a angst filled teenie-bopper and I am hoping to view it with new eyes. The wedding is tomorrow and how can you go wrong with a wedding, food and dancing that promises to be a blast upon itself.

Hopefully updates tomorrow.
